With my lab based clinical nutrition, there are many trends that I have come across. One such disturbing trend is that the vast majority of the C-Panels that my patients have done showed really low levels of Vitamin D.
Most people know that Vitamin D is important for keeping your bones strong and cancer prevention, but it also plays a vital role in bolstering your immune system. Ideal Vitamin D levels are between 50 and 75. Vitamin D deficiency is a huge problem for Americans. The average American has a Vit. D level of 27 therefore, it is actually rare that you find someone who is in the healthy range (even with the use of most Vitamin D supplements and prescription D).
Some of the benefits of Vitamin D are as follows:
· Bone integrity,
· cardiac health,
· cancer prevention
· sleep quality. The list goes on and on.
Symptoms of Vitamin D deficiency are:
· bone pain
· muscle weakness
· low energy levels
· chronic sickness.
According to WebMD.com, low Vitamin D levels have been associated with the following:
· Increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease
· cognitive impairment in older adults
· severe asthma in children
Research has also shown that Vitamin D could even play an important role in the treatment and prevention of type 1 and 2 diabetes, hypertension, glucose intolerance and multiple sclerosis.
We have all heard it many times: An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
I have a supplement called SuperD3 which is a micellized, water soluble, liquid D3. It is truly water soluble which is what differentiates it from prescription Vitamin D. (which is a synthetic oil based form of Vitamin D2.) Our bodies make D3 not D2. SuperD3 is water soluble and similar to the Vitamin D that our bodies make so it works much better than prescription Vitamin D at raising Vitamin D levels.
If you suspect that your levels of Vitamin D are low or would just like to have a confirmation test, my lab technicians can test your Vitamin D levels and the cost is only $45.00 since you are my patient. It can be done as a stand-alone test instead of doing the complete C-Panel if you desire. However, the complete C-Panel is only $250.00 and gives me much more insight into what is going on with your body. Either way, testing Vitamin D levels is very important so that we can work together to aggressively target your levels to try to bring them into acceptable ranges.
